How PayCalc researches and maintains content

Our goal is to make calculator assumptions auditable: primary sources for rules, explicit formulas for models, and regression tests for implementation.

Primary-source preference

When a calculation depends on a government rule, PayCalc prefers the agency that administers the rule. Federal payroll material is sourced primarily from the IRS and Social Security-related official publications; mortgage consumer-protection concepts are sourced from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau; investment education references use Investor.gov when appropriate.

Separate rules from examples

A tax rate, wage base, withholding method, or legal threshold is treated as a source-backed rule. A worked example is an illustration created by PayCalc to show how the rule behaves. Examples are not presented as personal recommendations or promises of a financial outcome.

Calculation testing

PayCalc's calculation engines are covered by automated unit and integration tests. Browser-level regression tests also open the deployed site, enter known scenarios, and assert the displayed values. This second layer is intended to catch integration errors that formula-only tests can miss.

Tax-year maintenance

Payroll withholding rules change. The paycheck calculator identifies the tax year used, stores jurisdiction-specific rule data, and maintains verification metadata. When rules are changed, the associated automated tests are expected to change with them rather than silently accepting a different result.

Corrections

If a published explanation conflicts with the calculator implementation or an official source, the official source and verified rule take priority. Corrections should update both explanatory content and automated tests when the issue affects calculation behavior.

Advertising independence

Advertising does not determine calculator formulas, tax rules, or editorial conclusions. Sponsored material, if introduced, must remain visually distinct from navigation and calculator controls. PayCalc does not ask visitors to click ads or imply that an advertisement is part of a calculation result.
